Species composition is a variable which is not directly observed on the spot but which is derived from other variables and their distributions including tree species and dbh. What is meant if in an inventory report it is stated that the ratio deciduous / coniferous is 75:25? Species composition can essentially be defined as % of number of stems or % of basal area or % of growing stock in the different classes.
