Species composition is a variable which is not directly observed on  the spot but which is derived from other variables and their  distributions including [[tree species]] and [[Diameter at breast  height|dbh]]. What is meant if in an inventory report it is stated that  the ratio deciduous / coniferous is 75:25? Species composition can  essentially be defined as % of number of [[Tree Definition|stems]] or % of [[Forest Definition|basal area]] or % of [[Forest definition|growing stock]] in the different classes.
