In many textbooks remote sensing in general is defined as "measuring without being in direct contact with the object of interest". More precisley, the term "sensing" is directly related to the human sensory system of vision. We may understand human vision with an eye build by a lens and photosensitive rods as a protoype of measuring variations of electromagnetic radiation with a digital camera build by a focal lens and charge coupled divices (CCD) sensor. Other sensory systems which we find in nature and were mimiced by humans like sonic orientation systems of bats and whales are not not included. In fact, we may date the birth of remote sensing to the invention of the photography by Niepce, Daguree and Talbot.
