The GRASS Shell window is a relict of the UNIX World. Nevertheless it is still very useful today. You can enter the GRASS commands which you do not find in the toolbox or use it for batch processing. This alternative method easily runs jobs in GRASS from a collection of commands in a shell script file. In addition it is fairly easy to write a GRASS job as shell script which launches GRASS, does the operation and cleans up the temporary files.
You can find an example for GRASS shell application under region settings.
